They need a better centre to be competitive.

Baynes 86 C - should be a lock for cairns when finishes nba, too early atm, will be 35+
Brandt 89 C - has stated there is not enough money for him to return. Return to Perth?
Motum 90 PF/C - courted by multiple nbl teams - possibly Adelaide starter
Mathiang 92 C - courted by multiple nbl teams - possibly Melbourne starter
Landale 95 PF/C - unlikely but possible small stint in nbl if Euroleague cancelled.
Reath 96 C - very little news on - Perth perhaps
Salt 96 C - courted by multiple nbl teams - possibly nz backup
Humphries 98 C - looks to be leaning towards remaniing in g league, return to Sydney?

Few other aus/kiwi options currently
No real post option ps coming from college in the next 2 years.

Let's be honest, who wouldn't want to play with Machado? Surely it would be an attractive carrot to dangle in front of free agent having someone that will get you the ball in the right spots. I can't wait to see what he does next with a full season here under his belt to understand the interpretations of our referees.

Someone mentioned Froling as backup centre, is that Harry or Sam ?

I don't think centre is that weak if they are injury free as the added opportunity could bring out the best in them. But I'd still like another option to play some minutes at centre if foul trouble or injuries happen, has Majok Deng bulked up at all?

Fantastic news!

It's good to see a player who's a hit with the locals stay longer than a year and is not successfully poached.

I'm all for player opportunities, but one thing that has been missing for a long while is the player-fan connection. You only get that if 1) the player is a good local that's at your club (Mahersy type), 2) the player has been at your club for many years that it becomes like home (Davis type) or 3) Import which captures the crowds imagination (Farley type). As a 36ers fan, i've used 36ers as examples.

Perth clearly have that with Cotton. It's wonderful. The fairytale type year of Cairns is building that with Machado.

Part of what is preventing this is a bit of 1) Historically Europe would poach our quality players [this happens less during LK era which is good] and 2) Poorer club finds gem player, Rich club steals said gem player for better $$$, decent chance rich club doesnt get chemistry/roles right, that player doesn't have the same magic

Wonder if a "franchise tag" type scenario could be created to assist clubs to keep these types of players away from being poached. The method of doing so would have to be more carrot than stick - can't be denying opportunities within NBL, no real way to prevent Euro opportunities.

With 10 man rosters the only way they could keep Fisher ( unless Kenny leaves) is as a DP to which I think Fisher is too old.
Dufelmeier is right age for DP.

Wynyard is likely going to Breakers.

Fisher is 6'2 born 94
Dufelmeier is 6’1 born 96

Based on qbl vs nbl1 south performances, I’d be keeping Dufelmeier.

Wynyard has gone downhill since 1st season of college, maybe no can develop him. No doubt he would be more comfortable there.

Cairns should be going after lat mayen or okwera imo. I’m not sure blagojevic or Krslovic are long term nbl players.

The Cairns Taipans have issued a statement indicating that negotiations remain ongoing with star point guard Scott Machado despite reports from media that he had re-signed with the Club on a multi-year contract.
Cairns released the following statement in relation to Machado and other players from their NBL20 campaign..
Despite a number of media reports, the CQUniversity Cairns Taipans are yet to formalise an agreement with former point guard Scott Machado at this stage.
While ongoing conversations with his agent have been positive and Machado has openly expressed his desire to return, there is no finalised contract given the unknown dates of the upcoming seasons.
The Taipans are at various stages with a number of players in regards to the 2020-21 NBL season, and look forward to sharing the news at a more appropriate time.
In 31 games last season, Machado posted averages of 16.6 points and 7.7 assists per game, leading the Snakes from the bottom of the table the season prior to the finals as well as being named in the All-NBL First Team.

Disappointing, but hopefully they are close.

Do you think age is an issue?

Whilst I applaud the NBL for being proactive in trying to contain costs and ensure the viability of the league, the salary-cut measures seem to be poorly thought out. Players & clubs now renegotiating longer-term, back-ended contracts.
But Cairns probably not keen on giving a 3 year deal to somebody who's already 30.

Anyway, hopefully he is genuine about wanting to return to Cairns, and they can get a deal over the line.

Imports
Perth Cotton + Kay(most likely)
Cairns Machado + Newbill(most likely) - aus centre replacement for oliver
S.E Melbourne Wesley + ?(Possibly Roberson)
NZ Hopson + ?(Possibly Ashley) - possibly only 1 import and spend big on Webster brothers and fotu.
Melbourne Prather +?(Likely an elite pg) - replacement for Trimble, aus centre needed
Sydney ?(hopefully tate and 1 new pg) - replacement for ware after poor season
Illawarra ?(2 new imports) - needelite pg and sf or post player
Adelaide ?(Possibly Randle, hopefully 2 new) - a pg and sf

Perth Lookin like

Import / Norton
Cotton / Buluk
Import / Steindl / Travers(DP)
Kay / Wagstaff
(Brandt/Mathiang) / Majok

Australian sf needed with if no citizenship for cotton, adel/Broekhoff etc

Martin cannot fit in a 10 roster team unless they make Norton a starting pg. it would then open up Brandt/Mathiang spot as a potential import spot.

The talk of Cotton as an import has me wondering are there any ex NBL imports that could be taking out citizenship and become more valuable to an NBL team?

Would they be too old if say a Gary Ervin at 36 suddenly gained citizenship and could play 15 minutes/game?

You will find fans across the NBL questioned why Didi was considered a Next Start when he was ineligible for the draft (the original requirement for Next Stars).

As long as all other teams can have draftees as Next Stars, I'm down with that.

Didi was good for the league, and draft and stash will be the future of the NS program, but the sudden change of rules of the fly though after the Kings approached the NBL had everyone asking questions considering he'd normally be an import.

Naturalisation is nothing new, if a player loves the NBL and Australia so much they want to get their citizenship, well that's just a credit to the team and the NBL.

Cairns did the perfect moneyball, reasonably priced imports

I can't help wondering if Cairns won't be completely screwed by the salary cap measures for next season.

Last season Cairns did what they normally do.
Cheap locals, and scrape together what they can, to make liveable offers to imports looking to show-case their game for a season. Some years it works, last season they hit the jackpot with three very good imports.
It's obviously a different model, to that of a team trying to make the GF every year, but it works.

Keep in mind that we should assume they would be getting a subsidy to bring them up to the salary floor.
How do they make even half-reasonable offers to imports for next season, if its effectively grossed up, and will push them over the cap.
IIRC the floor was around $1.3M last season.
Given the likely bias, I'd guess they'll only be able to spend the equivalent of around $1M next season.

Dazz Cairns is a immunity based club struggling to compete in the NBL. They do a good job and with the Covid effect in place they will struggle. All the WAWankers are talking about adding Cotton etc. No tourists in Cairns ='s no Snakes. There needs to to be a firm enforceable cap (won't happen) and an import limit. 2. Future Stars is gone so 2 it is.

Yeah, it all a bit messy.
I thought from the start, that as a covid only measure they should have brought in some kind of hard cap (points and/or salary) just for next season (with existing contracts grandfathered)
The whole "salary cut" thing has turned into a shemozzle.

Hopefully the league will crack open the equalisation fund and help Cairns retain some of their players.
